Some thoughts

Of course, there are physiological differences in people. Some have great memories to store facts, others great abilities in dexterous ways. Some better at concentrating. Some, like me, it goes in one ear and out the other. But when needed useful information does come out. We should be careful judging which is better.

Teachers should bring out the best in each without comparing. The job of a teacher is to recognize distinctions and work with each one individually to help that person find a skill to master to have both a wonderful life and to serve others effectively. Some could be artisans: craftspeople, bakers, carpenters, electricians, etc. not all will be scholars. All skills are needed.

Society is a reflection of the quality of our teacher’s abilities.  Today, there is a lot of confusion with wars, climate, poverty, and people not living up to their potential. We have a long way to go to improve our educational system.

In the past, teachers felt that they offer the same education equally to all students and that learning was solely the responsibility of the student. That is not so. A teacher has to become a great coach to recognize and bring out the best and unique qualities from each student. The world surely needs great teachers.

Takashi Harada, when he was a junior high school track and field coach, developed a wonderful method to bring out the best from his students, and the school went from the lowest rated to the highest. Focusing on self reliance, twelve students became national champions in their own discipline and one student, Shohei Otani, who practiced the Harada method became the most famous baseball player in Japan and recently joined the Los Angeles Angels.

当然ながら我々には個性がある。あるものは集中力や記憶力に優れ、ある者は手先が器用であるし、一方では（私のように）記憶を苦手とする者もいる。だが有用な情報を前にした時、私たちはその選択と判断に慎重にならねばならない。

教師は生徒をいたずらに比較することなく、彼らの可能性を最大限に引き出さねばならない。教師の仕事とは、生徒が、自他の人生を豊かなものにするために磨き続けるスキルを見つけさせる事だ。そのために教師は生徒の特質を知り、個々に働きかける。その結果、ある者はコック、大工、電気技師などの職人の道を歩むだろう。社会が求めているのは学者だけではない。全てのスキルが社会を支えているのだ。

社会とは、教師の能力レベルの反映である。今、我々の社会は戦争や犯罪、貧困、そして可能性を十分生きられていない人々によって混乱をきたしている。教育制度改革の道のりはまだ長い。

かつて、教師は全ての生徒に同じ内容の教育を提供すればよいと信じてきた。学ぶ責任は生徒の側にしかないと考えてきた。そうではない。教師は優れたコーチにならねばならない。個々の生徒の可能性を認識し、それを最大限引き出すために。世界は、優れた教師を必要としているのだ。

原田隆史は、中学校の陸上部監督時代に、生徒の可能性を引き出すための素晴らしいメソッドを開発した。最低ランクに位置していた学校は、最高レベルの学校へと変貌を遂げた。「自立」に力点をおいたこのメソッドによって、１２人の生徒がそれぞれのフィールドにおける日本一になった。同じく原田メソッドで学んだ大谷翔平は日本で最も有名な野球選手となった。ロサンジェルス・エンジェルスへの入団が決まった。
